What is EPF/PF?
The Employee Provident Fund (EPF), commonly referred to as PF, is a government-backed retirement savings scheme in India managed by the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO). During your employment in India, both you and your employer contributed a percentage of your salary to this fund, which continues to earn interest over time.
The NRI Challenge Once a person becomes an NRI, they are often unable to take the time to clear claims related to EPF and PF which were missed once they left their Indian company. Navigating the EPFO portals, resolving KYC mismatches, and handling these government-related formalities can be extremely tedious and time-consuming from abroad.
The Claim Process for NRIs
Many NRIs are unaware of the specific rules regarding their provident fund. If you are relocating abroad permanently, you do not have to wait until retirement age; you are eligible to withdraw your entire EPF balance under the “Abroad Settlement” clause.
